Song of the Sea, Tomm Moore

Song of the Sea, Tomm Moore

Song of the Sea is a 2014 Irish animated film. It is a beautifully crafted traditional animation. This is the same team that created The Secret of Kells in 2009. In 2015 it was nominated for the Academy award for Best Animated Feature. It tells the story of a young Irish boy called Ben and his little sister Saoirse (the last seal-child). It is full of magic, folklore and legend. Artistically rich and original.

It is refreshing to see that studios still use traditional methods to create great animations instead of assuming that the latest box of tricks and effects are the only way ahead. It’s also great that it’s not just Japan and the great studios like Ghibli that are producing such work.
