The Death of Spock, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek is one of those things that I’ve grown up with. A famous optimistic 1960’s view of the future. All races and species living together (well apart from the Klingons and the Romulans) under the Federation. Kirk baring his chest and getting the green alien girl. It was always Spock that interested me the most. His logic and rational thought always balancing out the more emotional position of Bones and Kirk. Somehow that made me more emotionally attached to Spock.
Often when these iconic series are moved to the big screen they lose some of their original charm. With Star Trek though they managed to get more into the characters in the films. The interaction between Bones and that green blooded vulcan is great.

This emotional attachment to Spock really came out for me int Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan in his death scene. Spock does what he sees as the most rational thing he can do. Give up his life to save the lives of the rest of the Enterprise. The emotion in the scene comes from Kirk brought out by Spock’s rationalisation of the situation. We are in Kirk’s shoes wanting to break through the glass, rescue Spock and embrace him into our arms.

To Spock “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” (or the one).
The line that always gets me though is when he says to Kirk, “I have been and always shall be your friend”. Behind Spock’s logic is more “humanity” than the rest of them put together.
